Hardscape is the backbone of every usable outdoor space in Riverside. Paver patios, driveways, pool decks, fire pit seating, and walkways.

Riverside clay-loam is the number one thing most hardscape contractors get wrong. At 850 feet of elevation in the Inland Empire valley, the soil holds winter moisture, shrinks when dry, and moves whatever’s on top of it if the base isn’t engineered for it. Stamped concrete slabs crack at their joints. Pavers set on a thin base shift and lip out within a couple seasons. We pre-soak the subgrade, install geotextile fabric, and compact a 4 to 6 inch Class II base at 95% Proctor density before a single paver goes down – thicker for driveways.

Monarch Landscape & Design has built hardscape across the Inland Empire since 2009. Riverside neighborhoods run the full range – Canyon Crest, Orangecrest, Mission Grove, and Victoria Grove have strict HOA architectural review, while Wood Streets, Woodcrest, and Arlington are looser or unincorporated. We source pavers from Belgard, Angelus Block, and Orco – all manufactured in Southern California – and match the supplier to your HOA palette and project scope. Serving Riverside and neighboring Corona, Jurupa Valley, Eastvale, Moreno Valley, and Fontana.

Layers of a Proper Riverside Paver Installation

Every paver surface we build in Riverside follows this structure from the top down. No shortcuts.

Pavers Surface
The finished surface, interlocking concrete pavers from Belgard, Angelus, or Orco. Color-through manufacturing resists UV fading in Riverside sun. Lighter tones stay cooler underfoot during 95 to 105 degree summers.
Polymeric Sand Joints Joints
Locks pavers together, prevents weed growth and blocks Argentine ant tunneling. Polymeric sand hardens in place and resists erosion from winter rains and irrigation overspray. Standard on every Riverside install.
Sand Setting Bed Leveling
1-inch layer of coarse washed sand screeded flat. Provides the final leveling surface for the pavers and allows minor adjustments during installation.
Compacted Class II Base Foundation
4 to 6 inches of Class II aggregate base compacted in 3-4 inch lifts to 95% Proctor density over pre-soaked clay-loam. Each lift wetted before compaction for maximum density. We step the base up to 6-8 inches on driveways and RV aprons to handle vehicle loads over expansive soil.
Geotextile Fabric Separation
Separates the compacted base from Riverside clay-loam subgrade. Prevents base rock from migrating down into the clay as it expands and contracts, and keeps the engineered layers intact over time.
Subgrade Prep (Clay-Loam Conditioning) Excavation
Over-excavate below planned base depth, pre-soak the Riverside clay-loam to moisture equilibrium, then grade for drainage slope. Clay-loam conditioning is the step most contractors skip, and the reason their Riverside pavers shift within a few years.

Why Riverside Properties Need Hardscape Specialists

Riverside’s combination of expansive clay-loam soil, 95 to 105 degree summers, HOA architectural review in most master-planned tracts, Santa Ana wind events, and 10 inches of annual rainfall makes paver installation more demanding than most of Southern California. We build to ICPI standards – 95% Proctor compaction on the base layer, compacted in 3 to 4 inch lifts over pre-soaked clay-loam. Pavers come from Belgard, Angelus Block, or Orco – all Southern California manufactured. Here’s what we deal with on every Riverside job.

  • Clay-Loam Subgrade: Riverside clay-loam expands when wet and shrinks when dry, which moves the subgrade underneath a paver patio seasonally. We pre-soak and over-excavate the clay to moisture equilibrium, install geotextile fabric, and run a 4 to 6 inch base – or 6 to 8 inches on driveways – to absorb movement
  • Pavers Over Stamped Concrete: Stamped concrete slabs crack at control joints when clay-loam moves. Pavers flex with the soil because each unit is independent and locked by sand joints. Same look as stamped concrete, longer service life in Riverside soil
  • HOA Architectural Review: Canyon Crest, Orangecrest, Mission Grove, Victoria Grove, and Hawarden Hills all require architectural review before paver work. Color selection is the common sticking point. We prep the submittal package with paver specs and color samples so it clears on the first pass
  • Polymeric Sand for Ant Prevention: Riverside has active Argentine ant colonies in most residential neighborhoods. Plain mason sand in paver joints lets them tunnel freely. We install polymeric sand standard on every job – it hardens into a flexible binder ants can’t dig through
  • Driveway Load Ratings: Riverside driveways regularly see RV aprons, fire code access requirements, and daily multi-vehicle loads. We rate driveway base to 6-8 inches compacted CAB and use 80mm herringbone pavers – the only pattern with enough interlock to resist rutting under repeated wheel loads
  • Winter Rain Drainage: Riverside gets 10 inches of annual rainfall, mostly in winter storm pulses. We grade every paver surface with minimum 2% slope and install drainage channels that move water away from the foundation and out of the neighbor’s sightline

Hardscape Types & Applications

Five hardscape categories we install across Riverside, each engineered for clay-loam and Inland Empire summers.

Interlocking Concrete Pavers

The workhorse of Riverside hardscape. Rated at 8,000+ PSI – more than double poured concrete’s 3,500-4,000 PSI. Patios, walkways, and pool decks on a properly engineered base over conditioned clay-loam. Belgard, Angelus, and Orco color-through pavers resist UV fading, and interlocking concrete pavement patterns distribute load so individual pavers don’t shift as the clay expands and contracts seasonally. Sand joints absorb thermal movement from 95 to 105 degree summers instead of cracking like poured slabs. HOA-approved neutral colors for Canyon Crest, Orangecrest, Victoria Grove, and Mission Grove.

Pavers vs Stamped Concrete

Stamped concrete is cheaper upfront and looks great for a couple years. In Riverside clay-loam it cracks. The subgrade swells in winter and shrinks in summer, the slab moves with it, and you get hairline cracks at every control joint and often across the field. Pavers flex because each unit moves independently in its sand bed. If you want the stamped-concrete aesthetic, we install interlocking pavers in ashlar or cobble patterns that read the same visually and actually last in Riverside soil.

Paver Driveways & RV Aprons

Heavy-duty base engineered for vehicle and RV loads over conditioned clay-loam. Herringbone is the only pattern we use on driveways – highest interlock strength, resists shifting and rutting under wheel loads as the subgrade moves seasonally. We compact a 6 to 8 inch Class II base in 3-4 inch lifts at 95% Proctor density and install steel or concrete edge restraints that lock the field pavers in place permanently. 80mm thick pavers standard on every Riverside driveway install – thin 60mm pavers crack under RV tire loads.

Pool Deck Pavers

Non-slip, heat-reflective surfaces for Riverside pool surrounds. Integrated coping that ties into the pool edge for a clean look. Proper slope moves splash water to deck drains instead of back into the pool. We match paver color and texture to your pool finish and HOA-approved palettes. We steer away from travertine on Riverside pool decks – Riverside Public Utilities water stains porous stone yellow within a couple seasons. Color-through concrete pavers in cream or sand tones give the same cool-underfoot feel without the mineral stain problem. Running bond or random ashlar patterns for pool decks.

Paver Fire Pit & Seating Areas

Built-in fire pits with paver surrounds and seating walls. Gas and wood-burning options. The paver field extends into a seating area with low walls capped in matching material. Designed for the long evening season Riverside weather allows – comfortable outside 8 months out of the year.

Riverside Neighborhoods We Serve

Hardscape engineered for Riverside’s clay-loam subgrade and HOA architectural review, across every part of town.

Canyon Crest

Hillside lots with strict architectural review and mid-to-high-end finish standards. Neutral Belgard or Angelus paver colors and well-built patio integrations read best here. We prep the full submittal package, site plan, paver specifications, color samples, and CSLB documentation, so your project clears review on the first pass.

Orangecrest

Master-planned and HOA-governed. Family-heavy neighborhood with a lot of driveway replacements and backyard patio work. Clay-loam subgrade throughout. We pre-soak and over-excavate on every Orangecrest project to keep pavers flat as seasonal moisture swings move the soil underneath.

Mission Grove

Master-planned, HOA-governed, warm-tone paver palettes approved most easily. Pool deck work and backyard paver patios make up most of our Mission Grove hardscape, with polymeric sand standard to keep Argentine ants out of the joints.

Victoria Grove

Gated master-planned community with HOA color constraints on driveway and front-walk pavers. We verify the approved palette before the estimate so there’s no back-and-forth in review. Color-through pavers from our Belgard or Angelus stock match most Victoria Grove approvals.

Wood Streets

Historic 1920s-1940s homes with character preservation and looser HOA rules. Pattern and color flexibility is higher here than the master-planned tracts. We see a lot of period-appropriate cobble and running-bond paver patios in the Wood Streets, usually with mature tree root considerations on patio replacements.

Woodcrest & Hawarden Hills

Semi-rural Woodcrest has 1/2 acre to 5 acre lots with looser regs, long driveways and RV aprons are common. Hawarden Hills estate lots require architectural review on hillside work. Both neighborhoods get heavier base prep due to larger hardscape footprints and vehicle loads.

What Our Customers Say

“Monarch built our back patio and walkway in Canyon Crest with Belgard pavers. Freddy walked us through why pavers beat stamped concrete in our soil, and two rainy seasons later everything is still flat and tight. The crew handled the HOA submittal and kept us in the loop the whole time. No complaints.”
M. Romero
Riverside, Canyon Crest
“Replaced our cracked stamped concrete driveway with herringbone Angelus pavers and added an RV apron. The old slab had cracks every few feet from the clay moving, and Monarch dug down deeper than I expected before laying base. Two years in, driveway is dead flat. The polymeric sand has kept the ants out too.”
T. Vance

Riverside Hardscape FAQs

Are pavers better than stamped concrete in Riverside clay soil?
Yes. Riverside sits on expansive clay-loam that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Stamped concrete is a rigid slab with control joints, and when the subgrade moves, the slab cracks at those joints or across the field. Interlocking pavers flex with seasonal movement because each paver is an independent unit locked together by sand joints. The system relaxes with the clay instead of fighting it. Pavers cost more upfront than stamped concrete, but in Riverside’s soil they outlast it by a wide margin and never need patching.
Why do you recommend against travertine in Riverside?
Travertine is porous natural stone. It absorbs mineral content from Riverside Public Utilities tap water, iron, calcium, and magnesium, and yellows over time. Irrigation overspray and pool splash accelerate the staining. You end up with a travertine pool deck that starts off cream colored and fades to uneven yellow within 2 to 3 summers. We steer Riverside homeowners toward color-through interlocking concrete pavers from Belgard, Angelus, or Orco instead. Same cooler-underfoot feel, same premium look, no mineral staining.
What brand of pavers do you install in Riverside?
Belgard, Angelus, and Orco are our three primary paver suppliers in Riverside. All three are manufactured in Southern California, which keeps delivery costs down and shortens lead times. Belgard has the widest premium color palette for HOA-heavy neighborhoods like Canyon Crest and Orangecrest. Angelus has the strongest value line and the most consistent sizing for herringbone driveways. Orco is locally owned and competitive on larger commercial jobs. We match the supplier to the project scope, HOA color palette, and budget.
Do I need HOA approval for pavers in Riverside?
Depends on the neighborhood. Canyon Crest, Orangecrest, Victoria Grove, Mission Grove, and the master-planned parts of Hawarden Hills all require architectural review before any paver patio, driveway, or pool deck work. Color selection is the most common snag, HOAs often restrict pavers to specific earth-tone palettes. Woodcrest, Arlington, Wood Streets, and La Sierra are looser or have no HOA. We check your tract’s rules before the estimate and prep the full submittal package where it’s needed, site plan, paver specs, color samples, and CSLB documentation. Budget 2 to 4 weeks for approval. Call (760) 792-7627 for a free estimate.
What keeps ants out of paver joints in Riverside?
Polymeric sand. It’s a sand-polymer blend swept into paver joints then activated with a light water mist, which hardens it into a flexible binder. Ants can’t tunnel through it the way they can through plain mason sand, and weed seeds can’t root in it either. Riverside has active Argentine ant colonies in most residential neighborhoods, and they’ll tunnel under and between pavers set on regular sand within the first year. Every paver install we do in Riverside gets polymeric sand standard. Plan on reapplying every 7 to 10 years as it weathers.
How deep does the base need to be for Riverside pavers?
4 to 6 inches of Class II aggregate base (CAB) compacted to 95% Proctor density for patios and walkways, and 6 to 8 inches for driveways and RV aprons. We build thicker than the standard 3 inch spec you see in sandy-soil markets because Riverside clay-loam moves seasonally and the engineered base has to absorb that movement without telegraphing it up to the paver surface. The base is compacted in 3 to 4 inch lifts, each lift wetted before compaction. Over expansive soil we also pre-soak the subgrade and install geotextile fabric between the clay and the base to keep the two layers from mixing over time.
