The High Desert has 300+ evenings a year where the temperature drops to perfect outdoor weather.

A fire pit or outdoor fireplace turns your backyard into a year-round living space, pair it with a custom playscape or putting green and the whole family stays outside. We build custom fire features in concrete, stone, and steel, designed for desert wind and San Bernardino County fire codes.

Monarch Landscape & Design has built fire pits and outdoor fireplaces across all seven High Desert cities since 2009. Based in Hesperia and serving Victorville, Apple Valley, Adelanto, Phelan, Barstow, and Oak Hills. Gas fire pits, fire tables, full outdoor fireplaces, and BBQ islands. We handle the gas line, the masonry, and the permits. Every project starts with a free on-site visit. We also build fire features for commercial properties and outdoor hospitality spaces.

What Goes Into a Custom Fire Pit

Every component matters. Here’s what we build into every fire feature.

Fire Bowl / Burner Heat Source
H-burner or ring burner rated 40,000-65,000 BTU for residential sizes, with 18-inch minimum interior diameter. Natural gas or propane. The heat source everything else is built around.
Gas Line & Shut-Off Valve Fuel Delivery
Gas line trenched from the house to the fire feature, through caliche when needed. C-36 licensed plumber required for all gas line work. Shut-off valve for instant on/off and safety compliance with SB County fire codes.
Wind Guard Desert Critical
1/4-inch tempered glass panels, 6-8 inches tall, extending 5 inches beyond the burner opening on all sides. Non-negotiable in the High Desert where 40-80 mph gusts are routine. Phelan and Oak Hills get 8-inch guards.
Fire-Rated Base & Surround Structure
Concrete block core with fire brick liner rated to 2,000F+. Standard concrete block spalls and cracks from direct flame. Fire-rated mortar and heat shields between the burner and surrounding materials. Built on reinforced foundation over caliche.
Veneer / Finish Appearance
Natural stone, stucco, or tile over the structural core. All materials must handle 110+ degree ambient plus direct flame heat. For fire media: fire glass, lava rock, or ceramic logs. Never use regular river rock, trapped moisture causes it to explode under heat.
Seating Wall Comfort
Integrated seating around the fire pit at 18-24 inches high with capstone finish. Adds usable seating without taking up patio space with separate furniture. Positioned with proper heat clearance from the fire feature.
Drainage Protection
Desert flash floods can saturate a patio area in minutes. Proper drainage around the fire feature base prevents water pooling, protects the gas line, and keeps the foundation stable through monsoon season.

Why Fire Pits Work in the High Desert

Desert evenings cool down fast. A fire pit extends your outdoor season to 12 months.

  • 300+ Outdoor Evenings: Summer nights drop to the 70s. Fall through spring evenings are cool enough for a fire feature. You’ll use it more than anywhere else in California.
  • Desert Wind Design: Standard fire pits blow out in High Desert wind. We build wind guards into every design using tempered glass panels and position burners for reliable flame in gusts.
  • Fire Restriction Compliance: San Bernardino County bans open burning during fire season, and the MDAQMD restricts wood burning during winter inversions. Gas fire pits with approved shutoffs keep you legal year-round, instant on/off, no embers that can blow in 40-80 mph wind, no smoke complaints from neighbors. We pull the permit and schedule the gas inspection. Gas line work requires a C-36 licensed plumber, which we subcontract and include in every bid.
  • Caliche Base Prep: Gas lines need to be trenched through caliche to reach the fire feature. We own hydraulic equipment that breaks through it without renting.
  • Heat Island Design: Desert temperatures already reach 110+. We position fire features away from structures, use heat-rated materials, and design seating areas with proper clearance.

Cities We Build Fire Pits

Based in Hesperia. Building fire features across the entire High Desert with the same crew and the same quality.

Victorville

Spring Valley Lake backyards, Eagle Ranch entertaining areas. Gas fire pits built for HOA guidelines and lakeside wind conditions. Cajon Series sandy soil makes gas line trenching fast, we can trench, pipe, and backfill in the same day. Victorville averages 40-50 days over 100F, which means summer evenings in the 70s are perfect fire pit weather. SVL architectural committee pre-approval required, we know their process. 300+ clear evenings a year to use it.

Hesperia

Our hometown. Fire pits for new construction and renovation projects across all Hesperia neighborhoods. Hesperia Series sandy loam is good for gas line trenching, but granite bedrock in Summit Valley requires different routing. Most fire pits sit on a concrete or paver pad, we pour the pad and build the fire feature as one project. Wind guards are standard on every build, Cajon Pass gusts hit 40-80 mph through southern Hesperia. Silverwood’s 9,000-acre new construction community means thousands of blank backyards waiting for outdoor living spaces.

Apple Valley

Jess Ranch 55+ community, fire pits are the centerpiece of outdoor living for active adults. Sycamore Rocks estates on 2.5+ acre lots with rocky terrain are perfect for natural stone fire features built into the landscape. Helendale Series soil drains well but the argillic clay layer at depth can slow gas line trenching. Apple Valley averages 35-45 days over 100F, so evening fire pits get heavy use from October through April.

Adelanto

Adelanto Series clay soil at 8-16 inches means harder gas line trenching than sandy Victorville, budget extra for the argillic layer. SCLA and military families moving into 600+ new homes want outdoor living that works from day one. SB County fire permits apply to unincorporated areas around Adelanto. With 286 sunny days a year and cool desert evenings, a fire pit turns a bare slab patio into the room your family actually uses. Pair it with an Adelanto patio cover for shade by day and warmth by night.

Phelan

Wind-rated design is critical in Phelan, Cajon Pass gusts hit 50-100 mph. Every fire pit we build here gets an 8-inch tempered glass wind guard, not the standard 6-inch. DG soil digs easily for gas lines. Unincorporated SB County permits apply. With 80-100 nights below 32F, Phelan homeowners get the most use out of a fire pit of any city we serve, you’ll light it from October through April and on many summer evenings too.

Barstow

Barstow hits 70-80 days over 100F, but that means 300+ perfect fire pit evenings from October through April when the desert cools down. MCLB and Fort Irwin families want outdoor living spaces that work year-round. Cajon Series sand makes gas line trenching straightforward. At the lowest elevation in our service area (2,100 ft), Barstow gets the most UV exposure, so all stone veneer and concrete materials must be heat-rated for 170F+ pavement temperatures.

Fire Pit FAQs

How much does a custom fire pit cost in the High Desert?
Fire pits start at $2,500 base for a round block fire pit, with the gas line, accessories, and permit priced separately. Prefab fire tables start around $1,500 installed. Outdoor fireplaces run $8,000–$20,000+. Caliche excavation for gas line trenching adds cost, but we own our hydraulic equipment so that line item stays lower than contractors who rent. Call (760) 792-7627 for a free estimate.
Gas or wood-burning fire pit, which is better for the desert?
Gas is easier for the desert. The MDAQMD (Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District) restricts wood burning during winter inversions, and San Bernardino County fire restrictions ban open wood burning during fire season. Gas gives you instant on/off, clean burn with no smoke, no ash cleanup, no spark risk in 40-80 mph wind, and runs $1-$3 per hour on natural gas. Wood-burning pits work in permanent installations with spark screens, but fuel area cannot exceed 3 ft wide by 2 ft high per SB County fire regulations. We build both types and can walk you through the pros and cons for your specific property during a free consultation.
Do I need a permit for a fire pit?
Gas fire pits require a building permit and gas line inspection in San Bernardino County, this applies to every city we serve. Gas line work must be done by a C-36 licensed plumber; we subcontract this and include it in our bid. Wood-burning fire pits must meet setback requirements from structures and property lines. Exception: permanent fire rings fueled solely by natural gas or propane are exempt from SB County fire permits. We handle all permits and inspections so you don’t have to deal with the county yourself.
Can you build a fire pit that handles desert wind?
Yes. We build windscreens into every gas fire pit using 1/4-inch tempered glass panels, 6-8 inches tall. The guard extends 5 inches beyond the burner opening on all sides for proper airflow and flame stability. Burner placement and BTU rating are sized for High Desert wind conditions, 40-80 mph gusts are routine here, not unusual. A well-designed wind guard makes a fire pit usable year-round. This is especially important in Oak Hills Landscaping (40-60 mph gusts), Adelanto Landscaping, and Phelan Landscaping (50-100 mph gusts) where we spec 8-inch guards instead of 6-inch. On extreme wind days above 40 mph, do not operate any fire pit.
What materials work best for fire pits in the desert?
Fire-rated concrete block with fire brick liner (rated to 2,000F+), natural stone, and Corten or cast steel. All materials must handle 110+ degree ambient temperatures plus direct flame heat. We use fire-rated mortar and heat shields between the burner and surrounding materials. For fire media: fire glass ($3-$10/lb, modern look, smoke-free), lava rock ($0.50-$2/lb, excellent heat retention), or ceramic logs ($50-$300/set for a realistic wood look without wood). Never use regular river rock, trapped moisture causes it to explode under heat. Pair a fire pit with pavers or hardscape for a complete outdoor living area.
