Concrete Barstow jobs face the toughest conditions in our entire service area. At 2,100 feet in the deep Mojave, summer ground temperatures hit 150°F+, the alkaline soil eats standard cement from below, and anything poured mid-day in July cracks before the forms come off. Most concrete contractors use the same mix and methods here that they use in Riverside. That concrete fails within five years.

Monarch Landscape & Design has been pouring driveways, patios, and commercial slabs across Barstow for over 15 years. We use sulfate-resistant cement, schedule summer pours before sunrise, and cut control joints tight enough to handle 100-degree daily temperature swings. Our office is in Hesperia, 30 minutes down the I-15. When you need a Barstow concrete contractor who knows what this soil and heat do to a slab, that’s us.

Why Barstow Concrete Needs a Desert Specialist

Barstow sits at the lowest elevation of any city we serve, deep in the Mojave where the heat, soil chemistry, and wind conditions are more extreme than the Victor Valley. Standard concrete methods don’t hold up here.

  • Alkaline Soil with High Sulfates: Barstow sits on Cajon series sand and Victorville series alluvium with caliche layers 18-48 inches down on older surfaces. The alkaline, sulfate-rich soil reacts with standard Portland cement and breaks it down from the bottom. We pour with Type V or Type II/V sulfate-resistant cement on every job here
  • 115-120°F Summer Heat: ACI 305R says concrete should not be placed above 90°F ambient. In Barstow that means 4 AM starts June through September. We apply curing compound within 30 minutes of finishing and cover exposed slabs with wet burlap to fight the extreme evaporation rate
  • Constant Wind and Dust: Wind accelerates surface drying and embeds dust into wet concrete. We use windbreaks on exposed pours and time our finishing to stay ahead of the set
  • 100°F+ Daily Temperature Swings: From cool desert nights to scorching afternoons, concrete in Barstow expands and contracts more than anywhere else we work. We cut control joints at 8-foot intervals max to control where it cracks
  • Mixed Residential and Commercial: From Barstow Heights driveways to Lenwood Rd loading docks, we handle both residential and commercial pours with the right mix and spec for each

Concrete Services in Barstow

Every pour uses sulfate-resistant cement and desert-specific curing methods.

Residential Driveways

Standard, colored, and stamped concrete driveways for Barstow homes. We use sulfate-resistant mix to handle the alkaline soil and white pigment or light integral color to reduce heat absorption. Proper joint spacing is critical at this temperature range. We cut control joints at 8-foot intervals max to prevent random cracking.

Stamped & Decorative Concrete

Patios, walkways, and pool decks with stamped patterns. In Barstow’s extreme heat, we add retarder to the mix and stamp in sections to maintain workability. Color hardener gets applied before the concrete sets up too fast. The finished surface looks like natural stone without the maintenance.

Commercial Flatwork

Loading docks, warehouse floors, parking areas, and sidewalks for Barstow’s commercial corridor. We pour to commercial specs, typically 4,000 PSI with fiber reinforcement, and can handle large-volume continuous pours. Sawcut joints on a tight grid to control cracking under heavy loads.

Concrete Patios & Outdoor Living

Backyard patios built for a climate where outdoor living happens 9 months out of the year. Light-colored finishes that stay cooler underfoot. We orient drainage away from the house and include proper expansion joints sized for 100°F+ daily temperature cycles. Broom finish, exposed aggregate, or stamped, your call.

Foundation Repair & Replacement

Older Barstow homes have concrete foundations that have deteriorated from decades of alkaline soil contact and thermal cycling. We assess the damage, remove compromised sections, and pour new sulfate-resistant concrete. Proper vapor barriers and drainage keep the new foundation from repeating the same failure.

What Barstow Customers Say

“Our old driveway was crumbling from the bottom up. Monarch explained it was sulfate damage from the soil. They tore it out and poured new concrete with the right cement mix. Two summers in this heat and it still looks perfect. Should have called them years ago instead of patching it.”

“Needed a parking pad poured for my business on Lenwood and Monarch handled it without disrupting operations. They started at 4 AM, finished by mid-morning, and the quality is commercial grade. Clean work, on schedule, fair price.”

Barstow Neighborhoods We Pour In

Every part of Barstow has different soil conditions, traffic patterns, and concrete needs. We’ve poured in all of them.

Downtown / Main Street

Historic Barstow. Sidewalk replacement, commercial concrete, and driveway repair for older homes. Many foundations here show sulfate damage from decades of alkaline soil contact and need attention before they compromise the structure.

Lenwood Rd / Outlet Area

Commercial district along I-15. Parking areas, loading zones, and business flatwork. Higher PSI mixes, commercial-grade jointing, and slabs built to handle truck traffic and heavy loads year-round.

Barstow Heights

Elevated residential area south of I-40. Better soil conditions than the valley floor with less sulfate concentration. Mostly residential driveways, patios, and backyard projects for families who want outdoor living space.

Spanish Trail / Mountain View

Residential subdivisions east of town. Standard driveway and patio work for newer homes. Many properties here were built without patios or outdoor spaces. We add them with concrete that matches the home’s age and style.

Concrete Barstow, FAQs

How much does concrete cost in Barstow, CA?
Concrete runs about $7 to $15 per square foot, standard or stamped. Sulfate-resistant mix adds about $1 per square foot but prevents long-term failure from Barstow’s alkaline soil. Driveways and patios are priced at that same per-square-foot rate. We provide free written estimates. Call (760) 792-7627.
Why does concrete deteriorate faster in Barstow?
Two reasons: extreme heat and alkaline soil. Heat causes rapid moisture loss during curing, which weakens the surface layer and leads to spalling and cracking within a few years. Alkaline, sulfate-rich soil attacks standard Portland cement from below, causing the slab to break down from the bottom up. We address both with sulfate-resistant cement and proper curing methods: pre-dawn pours, ice in the mix water, and curing compound applied the moment we finish.
What is sulfate-resistant concrete and does Barstow need it?
Sulfate-resistant cement (Type V or Type II/V) resists chemical attack from sulfates in the soil. Barstow’s alkaline desert soil has elevated sulfate levels that break down standard Type I Portland cement over time. The concrete looks fine on top but deteriorates from the bottom where it contacts the soil. The upgrade costs about $1 more per square foot and adds decades to the life of the slab. For Barstow, it’s not optional.
Can you pour concrete when it’s 115 degrees in Barstow?
We can, but we won’t pour mid-day in July. We schedule summer pours starting at 4–5 AM and finish before 10 AM. We add ice to the mix water, use retarder admixture to slow the set time, and apply curing compound immediately after finishing. The concrete temperature at placement needs to stay under 90°F. Hot concrete sets too fast, traps air, and cracks. Early morning pours avoid all of that.
Do you do commercial concrete work in Barstow?
Yes. Loading docks, parking areas, warehouse floors, sidewalks, and ADA ramps for businesses along Lenwood Rd and the I-15 corridor. We pour to commercial spec, typically 4,000 PSI with fiber reinforcement, and can coordinate with general contractors on larger projects. Call (760) 792-7627 for a commercial estimate.
Do you offer free estimates in Barstow?
Free on-site consultations for any Barstow property. We drive from our Hesperia office, about 30 minutes on the I-15. We test the soil conditions, measure the project area, and provide a written estimate with mix specifications and pricing. No obligation. Call (760) 792-7627 or visit our consultation page to schedule.
