A backyard putting green isn't just turf on flat ground. The difference between a green that plays like a parking lot and one that plays like a country club is the base work, precision contour sculpting that creates realistic breaks, undulations, and cup placements.

That's the part most installers skip. Monarch Landscape & Design builds custom putting greens as part of complete backyard projects across Hesperia, Victorville, Apple Valley, Adelanto, Phelan, Barstow, and Oak Hills. Our greens are integrated with pools, patios, fire pits, and landscape lighting, designed together from day one, not bolted on after the fact. We also install putting greens for commercial properties and community amenity areas.

What Goes Into a Custom Putting Green

Every layer matters, from the turf surface you putt on to the subgrade you never see.

Putting Turf Surface Surface
Short-pile polypropylene or nylon turf at 0.5–0.75 inches with a tight 3/16” gauge. The dense weave creates true ball roll tuned to a Stimpmeter reading of 8–10, comparable to a well-maintained country club green.
Infill (Silica Sand) Infill
Fine silica sand only, no cooling infill like lawn turf. The sand controls ball speed and locks fibers upright. Applied in measured amounts and brushed in to achieve a consistent roll across the entire surface.
Shock Pad / Underlayment Cushion
Closed-cell foam pad installed under the turf for a softer feel underfoot and more realistic ball response. Prevents the “hard bounce” you get when turf sits directly on compacted base. Standard on all Monarch putting greens.
Compacted Base Foundation
4+ inches of Class II road base installed in 2-inch lifts with vibratory compaction to 90–95% Proctor density. Topped with a 1-inch crusher dust layer hand-shaped for breaks, undulations, and cup locations. This contoured sub-base is the art of putting green construction, and the reason a professional green plays nothing like a flat patch of short turf.
Weed Barrier Protection
Commercial-grade landscape fabric laid over the compacted base before turf installation. Blocks weed growth from below while allowing drainage. Critical in the High Desert where desert scrub roots are aggressive.
Subgrade Prep Excavation
4+ inches of excavation through native soil and caliche. Graded for drainage away from the home and any adjacent hardscape. Without proper subgrade prep, the base shifts and your contours lose accuracy within a season.
Edging / Fringe Turf Border
Taller lawn-style turf (1.5–2”) bordering the putting surface, 12–36 inches wide. Creates a visual transition, serves as a chipping target, and slows balls rolling off the green, just like fringe on a real course. Bender board or aluminum edging contains everything cleanly.

Why High Desert Properties Need Putting Green Specialists

The High Desert's caliche soil, extreme heat, and wind create problems that generic turf installers aren't equipped to solve. A putting green demands tighter tolerances than standard lawn turf, every contour and cup placement depends on a base that stays put through 110°F summers, 60 mph winds, and monsoon drainage.

  • Caliche Hardpan: Rock-hard calcium carbonate sits 6–18 inches below the surface across the entire service area. We break through it with hydraulic equipment to excavate properly graded sub-base, if you pour base on top of caliche, drainage fails and the contours shift
  • Extreme Heat: Surfaces hit 140°F in summer. UV-stabilized nylon turf holds up best in sustained 110°F+ temperatures. Polyurethane backing handles heat expansion better than latex. Short-pile putting turf absorbs less heat than taller lawn turf
  • Precision Contours: The contoured crusher dust layer must hold its shape for 15+ years. Our compacted Class II road base at 90–95% Proctor density doesn't shift or settle, so your breaks stay true season after season
  • Integrated Drainage: Desert storms saturate soil fast. Every green we build is graded to drain away from the house and adjacent hardscape, with drainage paths that work with, not against, pools, patios, and fire pits
  • Complete Backyard Integration: Most Monarch putting greens are built alongside pools, pergolas, hardscape, fire pits, and landscape lighting. One contractor, one timeline, coordinated grading

Cities We Build Putting Greens

Based in Hesperia. Building custom putting greens across every city in the High Desert with the same crew and the same quality.

Victorville Landscaping

Cajon Series sandy alluvium with caliche at 18–36 inches. Spring Valley Lake backyards, Eagle Ranch lots, and Green Tree properties. Putting greens integrated with pools and patios are the most common configuration here. We handle excavation through caliche and grade for drainage away from the home.

Hesperia Landscaping

Our home base. Hesperia Series sandy loam with granite bedrock in Summit Valley. The 800-ft elevation gradient across Hesperia means drainage planning is critical for every putting green project. Silverwood new construction, established neighborhoods, and hillside lots, we know every soil condition in this city.

Apple Valley Landscaping

Helendale Series soil with deep clay influence. Rocky terrain at Sycamore Rocks and Apple Valley Heights. Jess Ranch 55+ community and golf course lots, putting greens are especially popular here with retired golfers who want year-round practice at home.

Adelanto Landscaping

Adelanto Series soil has the most caliche in the service area. Budget extra for excavation, the Bt horizon here requires more breakout than pure sand. Active new construction pipeline with homeowners building complete backyard packages including greens, pools, and outdoor living spaces.

Phelan Landscaping

DG subgrade on 1–5 acre lots. Freeze-thaw rated materials are non-negotiable, Phelan gets 80–100 nights below 32°F. Cajon Pass winds of 50–70 mph mean proper edging and anchoring are critical. Large lots here are ideal for bigger multi-hole putting green designs.

Barstow Landscaping

Cajon Series sand, highly alkaline soils. Hottest city in the service area with 70–80 days over 100°F, UV-stabilized nylon turf holds up best here. Serving MCLB and Fort Irwin families who want backyard recreation that doesn't need irrigation or maintenance.

Oak Hills Landscaping

Transitional DG and alluvial soil on elevated terrain. Second-coldest after Phelan, freeze-thaw rated turf backing required. Large lots with natural slope and open views make this an ideal location for putting greens with mountain backdrops. County jurisdiction, no HOA restrictions in most areas.

How We Build Your Putting Green

Four phases, from design to final putt.

1

Design & Layout

Hole placement, contour mapping, drainage planning, and integration with your existing landscape. We design the green alongside Hardscaping, pool areas, and lighting so everything connects.

2

Excavation & Base

4+ inches of excavation through native soil and caliche. Class II road base installed in 2-inch lifts with vibratory compaction to 90–95% Proctor density. This base doesn't shift, your contours stay true for 15+ years.

3

Contour Sculpting

A 1-inch crusher dust layer is hand-shaped for breaks, undulations, and cup locations. This is the art of putting green construction, the step that separates a real green from a flat patch of short turf. Every slope is intentional.

4

Turf, Cups & Finish

Short-pile turf is rolled, seamed, and secured. Regulation cups set flush. Silica sand infill brushed in for speed control. Fringe turf border installed. Landscape integration, rockscape, lighting, and planting beds, completes the project.

What Our Customers Say

Read all 114 reviews on Google →

“We needed a patio and retaining wall on our Green Tree lot. The old concrete was cracked and the yard sloped toward the house. Monarch tore it all out, broke through the caliche, and built us a beautiful paver patio with proper drainage. Professional crew, fair price.”
Diana K.
Green Tree, Victorville
“The project included concrete work, a retaining wall, turf installation, and a patio, and the quality across the board was excellent. The team was professional, on time, and great at communicating. The retaining wall looks solid and well-built, and the turf completely transformed the space. My backyard now feels like a brand-new space that’s perfect for relaxing and spending time with family.”

Putting Green FAQs

How much does a backyard putting green cost?
Backyard putting greens cost $15–40 per square foot installed, depending on size and complexity. A typical 300 sqft green runs $6,000–$12,000 including turf, regulation cups, contoured base, and fringe. Smaller greens (<200 sqft) cost more per square foot ($30–40) due to the same base prep work on a smaller area. Caliche soil, common across the High Desert, adds to excavation costs. Call (760) 792-7627 or request a free estimate for exact pricing on your property.
What turf is used for putting greens vs regular artificial turf?
Putting green turf is completely different from lawn turf. It uses short-pile polypropylene or nylon fibers at 0.5–0.75 inches (vs lawn turf's 1.5–2.25 inches), a tighter 3/16” gauge for a denser surface, and silica sand infill only, no cooling infill. The tighter weave and shorter pile create a true ball roll. Residential greens are tuned to a Stimpmeter reading of 8–10, similar to a well-maintained country club. The base must be precision-sculpted, unlike standard ASTM-rated turf installations which use a flat base.
Can you build a putting green in a small High Desert backyard?
Yes, compact putting greens fit in 150–200 square foot side yards, L-shaped spaces, and narrow backyards. A small green with 1–2 regulation cups and a fringe border works in spaces most homeowners assume are too tight. Several Monarch projects show creative use of small lots, including greens tucked between pools and property walls. The key is the contour design, even a small green can have realistic breaks and undulations that make practice feel authentic.
How long does a putting green last in the desert heat?
A properly installed putting green lasts 15–20 years with UV-stabilized turf. Nylon turf holds up best in sustained 110°F+ temperatures, it's the most durable fiber available for putting surfaces. Polyurethane backing handles heat expansion better than latex. Short-pile putting green turf actually absorbs less heat than taller lawn turf because there's less surface area. The base and drainage determine long-term performance, our compacted Class II road base and crusher dust contours don't shift or settle over time.
Do you install putting green lighting for evening play?
Yes, low-voltage LED path lights and bollards from WAC and Kichler are wired during the base prep phase, before turf is laid. This eliminates the need to cut into finished turf later. Bollard lights along the green perimeter and recessed path lights in adjacent hardscape provide even illumination without glare. Monarch installs complete outdoor lighting systems as part of the project, putting green lighting is coordinated with patio, pool, and landscape lighting for a unified design.
Can you combine a putting green with a patio, pool area, or fire pit?
This is the most popular configuration. Most of the putting greens in our portfolio are integrated with pools, wood-look with open shade, flagstone patios, fire features, and rockscape borders. Building everything together means one contractor, one timeline, and coordinated grading and drainage. The putting green base prep happens alongside patio and pool excavation, so there's no rework. One project, one design, one crew.
